Traditional Speech Language Services

Speech & Language Therapy

At Portland Spelling Collective, we provide individualized speech and language therapy for children and adolescents with a variety of communication needs.

As licensed and certified Speech-Language Pathologists, we recognize that communication looks different for every person. Therapy is tailored to each client's strengths, needs, and goals, with a focus on meaningful, functional communication.

Our Services

Articulation & Speech Sound Disorders

Support for children who have difficulty producing speech sounds clearly or being understood by others. Therapy targets speech sound production and overall intelligibility.

Childhood Apraxia of Speech

Motor-based therapy for children who have difficulty planning and coordinating the movements needed for speech. Treatment focuses on building more accurate, consistent, and functional spoken communication.

Receptive & Expressive Language

Support for understanding and using language, including vocabulary, following directions, answering questions, sentence development, comprehension, and expressing thoughts and ideas.

Social Communication

Support for conversation, perspective-taking, self-advocacy, understanding social situations, and communicating effectively with others. Our approach is neurodiversity-affirming and focuses on authentic, meaningful communication rather than masking.

Augmentative & Alternative Communication (AAC)

AAC includes communication beyond spoken words, such as picture symbols, communication boards, speech-generating devices, sign language, and gestures.

AAC can support individuals who are nonspeaking, minimally speaking, or whose speech is not consistently understood. Therapy focuses on building reliable, functional communication for expressing needs, thoughts, ideas, and more—not just requesting.

Gestalt Language Processing & Echolalia

Some children communicate through echolalia, scripts, familiar phrases, or larger chunks of language. We recognize these forms of communication as potentially meaningful rather than something that simply needs to be eliminated.

GLP-informed therapy uses connection, play, natural interactions, and individualized language modeling to support increasingly flexible and self-generated communication.

Individualized to Each Communicator

Communication is not one-size-fits-all. Therapy may incorporate spoken language, AAC, visual supports, motor-based approaches, play, movement, and other communication modalities.

We believe in presuming competence, supporting autonomy, and helping each person develop reliable and meaningful ways to communicate.

Who We Work With

We support children and adolescents who are speaking, minimally speaking, nonspeaking, or unreliably speaking, including autistic and neurodivergent individuals, AAC users, and children with speech sound, language, social communication, or motor speech needs.
